Our Current State Representative Weighs In on the Race
The following Letter to the Editor was submitted to the Lakeshore Weekly News by our community’s current State Representative, John Benson:
Our community’s tradition of political fair play has been violated by an astonishingly negative war of personal destruction directed against the Democratic Party candidate for the Minnesota House, Jon Applebaum. Personal attacks do little to inform or inspire the public to participate in our democracy and should be rejected by the voters.
The last DFL-led legislative session took back some of the large tax breaks the wealthy got in 2000 and earlier because the resulting 10 years of budget deficits were unsustainable, according to the Democratic Party. The increased revenues were used to balance the state budget, restore state reserves, pay back our schools the $2 billion they were owed, freeze state college tuition, expand all-day kindergarten and make significant infrastructure investments.
Over 95 percent of Minnesotans now have health insurance and enjoy the lowest insurance premiums in the nation. If elected, does the Republican candidate plan to vote to repeal MnSure? Will he join the anti-choice majority in the Minnesota House? Does he approve of the marriage equality law? These tax, spending and social policies deserve an informed debate, but we have heard little or nothing of substance from the Republican candidate.
I’m cas[t]ing my vote for Jon Applebaum because he has pledged to continue the agenda I’ve outlined above and supported during my time in the Minnesota House. I have only the vaguest sense of what the Republican candidate stands for – I don’t know how anyone could.
Rep. John Benson
District 44B, Minnetonka, Plymouth and Woodland
